Lets take a look at why unlimited plans are a joke.
1) Even with the fastest home internet connection - say a 10mb cable connection. You will only be able to back up 3 to 4 Gigs of data a day. The reason, is because a 10mb connection is the download, the upload is no more than 2mb. You can do a speed test at www.speedtest.net. When you are backing up, you are uploading.
2) With most internet connections, you are paying for a limited amount of data transfer. In Canada, the most expensive connection with Rogers is around $100 a month, which will give you a monthly data transfer limit of 250 GB, with a daily cap of 40 GB. Notice though that the upload speeds are still extremely slow. Again, backing up uses the upload and not the download.
3) Charges for going over the monthly data cap are enormous as you can see. Rogers and Bell both charge around the same, with a maximum over charge or $60 a month.
4) Realistically, the most you can back up in a month under these circumatances are around 4gigs a day X 30 days which is 120 gigs a month. However, you will most likely be paying the additional $60 charge for data usage overage.
5) Companies that offer unlimited have been known to throttle your bandwidth after exceeding say 50 gigs. Some have cancelled accounts that exceeded 100 gigs, citing various reasons why.
6) Viper has back up plans over 100 Gigs (which are technically unlimited) as well, if you do need that much space, competitvely priced, as there are small home offices, DJ's or people in multimedia that need that much space. You can back up to 5 computers with the Home/Home Office edition, and Viper never throttles your bandwidth no matter how much space you are using.
7) Viper has a tool that you can download which will scan all your files and tell you how much space you actually need, and you can then pick the appopriate plan to suit your needs.
